HLK (Heavy Utility/Loader Kind) - STAR WARS Avengers

"In an attempt to research alternative combat resources to the Clone Army, a Republic scientist pursued an experiment to create superior military droids to those relied on by the Separatists. His research involved a variation of “reverse flash training,” essentially using sentients’ brain-scans to imprint advance logic and reasoning onto artificial droid minds.

He, and all of his research into the field, were seemingly destroyed when he initiated a self-destruct measure when Separatist forces attempted to steal his project. In the ensuing chaos, he was able to imprint part of his mind into a simple Heavy Utility/Loader Kind droid he’d been experimenting on, capable of withstanding the destruction of the facility around it.

This HLK droid then wandered the galaxy, housing the secret intellect of a great scientist and the advanced combat protocols he’d designed inside. It remains unclear which “voice” is truly in control, and though now a valuable ally to the Alliance Special Forces group, AVENGERS, it is as can be as unpredictable as it is destructive."

This is a actually recycled custom I made a while back of a generic industrial droid. I went for a green repaint and added some wrist and knee articulation.

Parts Recipe:
Crimson Dynamo (Iron Man Armored Adventures) - Base Figure
Hulk Buster Iron Man (90's Toy Biz) - Shoulder Armor
Deep Dive Iron Man - Knees

Captain Alderaan - STAR WARS Avengers

I actually started this first batch of STAR WARS AVENGERS back when Disney first purchased Star Wars. They've sat on my shelf for a while as I wanted to go back and add more insignias to Captain Aldeeran's armor.

"The sole survivor of an experiment to apply Clone combat training and flash learning to non-Clone soldiers representing various member-systems of the Republic, the volunteer from Alderaan was cryo-frozen in an emergency medical pod when the research facility housing the project fell to Separatist sabotage.

Thought dead, he drifted frozen in Outer Rim for decades until a chance rescue by Rebel salvagers. Essentially brought back from the dead, he was recruited by former Clone Commander Fury to join the Alliance in taking on the Galactic Empire, to bring back the ideals of the Republic that had fallen while he been in suspended animation.
He took on the title of Captain Alderaan in memory of his lost homeworld, and fashioned his armor after the Clone soldiers who had once been the champions of the Republic."

The inkjet waterslide decal I used for his shield lost a lot of its pigment in the transfer process, so looks pretty rought on his shield. I've since switched to laser printer decals that work much, much better.

Parts Recipe:
Cloud Car Pilot - Head
Republic Commando Boss - Torso, Gauntlets, Hands
Clone Trooper Heavy (Training Gear) - Shoulders, Thighs
Galactic Marine - Boots
Rebel Trooper - Helmet, with LEGO visor
Embo - Shield

Overkill - G.I. Jeff

So the G.I. Jeff episode of Community last season was amazing. Seasons 4 and 5 were a little uneven at times, but the homage to G.I. Joe was an amazing episode. The character designs were terrific, and I've been working on making figures of them in the style of modern G.I. Joe figures.

Señor Chang's cartoon counterpart is a Storm Shadow / Quick Kick based design, frustratingly called "Overkill." Frustrating because, uh, duh! Overkill is already a COBRA character! This bugged me at first, until I realized that given the attention to detail in this episode, some one noticed it, probably brought it up, and they decided to leave it in just to bug the fanatics... like me. Still, it is a pretty fitting code name for Ben/Kevin/El Tigre. Not a great facial likeness for Ken Jeong, but it's passable as a toy based on a cartoon based on another cartoon based on another toy of a character from a live action show.

The back shot shows off some of the water slide decal techniques I'm practicing with.

Parts Recipe:
Quick Kick - Top of head, Torso, Arms, Vest
Tunnel Rat - Head, Lower Legs
Storm Shadow - Thighs

G.I. Joe Logos

Here's a collection of various G.I. Joe symbols and logos I remade in Illustrator for various projects over the last few months. All are .pngs with transparent backgrounds, both in black and white and color. Vector versions in .pdf format can be found at the joecustoms.com file repository. Feel free to use these for your personal projects, I just act that you don't use them for any commercial/resale purposes. We've got the classic Dreadnok tattoo, the Neo-Dreadnok hood skull with and without text, the Pursuit of Cobra+ era Joe logo, and the Steel Brigade Patch.

G.I.Joe Resurgence II - "Mail-Away" Flyer

G.I. Joe Resurgence is a project by a group of customizers that imagines an entirely new, complete line of figures and vehicles that's a spiritual continuation of G.I. Joe's "glory days". PHX Customs have put together an exceptional collection of customs, but that's really just the beginning. There's an on going story arc between each year of Resurgence, as well as professionally designed card backs and other packaging. I was asked if I'd like to take a crack a recreating one of the old pack-in toy catalogs featuring Resurgence II, and I had a great time doing it! The 80's Joe-line had certain items available through mail order, and there were often designed as mission dossier flyers that doubled as order forms, like these. My modernized version points to an (imaginary) website/app instead of having an mail-order form. The first image is the "closed" front of the flyer, the second is the "opened" back, and the third is the interior.

You can see an examples of the type of catalogs from the 80's I used as my inspiration here. The catalogs were a lot of fun to work on, and I look forward to seeing what's in store next for Resurgence!

COBRA Feral

My first two "waves" of COBRA zombies were based on the special-infected ftome the Left 4 Dead games. Series three brings the freak-type zombies from another excellent zombie game, State of Decay.

This was a fun exercise in just how different a figure can look by rearranging it's own parts. I swapped the thighs and shoulders to change the proportions, then cut up and reshaped the lower legs into a digitigrade formation so he could scramble along on his fingers and toes. Another naked zombie, because they're just more terrifying that way sometimes.

Parts Recipe:
Nom Anor - Head
Sabretooth - Fingers
Grinnah (The Hobbit) - Base Figure

COBRA Screamer

My first two "waves" of COBRA zombies were based on the special-infected ftome the Left 4 Dead games. Series three brings the freak-type zombies from another excellent zombie game, State of Decay.

State of Decay's Screamers lack any arms or lower jaw rendering them incapable of a direct attack, but their shrieking attracts hordes of nearby zombies and can disorient the living. Interestingly, a similar concept was planned by unused for the L4D special-infected.

Parts Recipe:
Zombie-Viper - Head (cast)
Deadpool - Base figure
Namor - Feet

Undead Skeletons

This was a quick-fix project. These guys lacked any arm articulation, so I took some extra sets of legs, shortened them, and spliced them with the hands to let these two be a little more grabby. Followed it up with a black base and some gray and off-white dry brushes, and they were ready to shamble!

Samurai Jack - Time-displaced Samurai

"Long ago in a distant land, I, Aku, the shape-shifting Master of Darkness, unleashed an unspeakable evil! But a foolish Samurai warrior wielding a magic sword stepped forth to oppose me. Before the final blow was struck, I tore open a portal in time and flung him into the future, where my evil is law! Now the fool seeks to return to the past, and undo the future that is Aku!"

Samurai Jack is from a cartoon that came out a little later than most of my cartoon based custom action figures, but it was a pretty wonderful show with an amazing art style and character designs.

I've got a few more Samurai characters I'd like to make to go along with him, and maybe even tackle the evil Aku.

Parts Recipe:
Rain (The Corps!) - Head
Battle Blade Hogun - Topknot (chonmage)
Storm Shadow - Torso, Upper kimono
Kwinn - Forearms

31 Days of Dead!

Alright, here's the challenge. I'm going to try my hardest to post something new everyday this month! I've got about 10 figures complete, another handful that just need a few tweaks, and a some graphic design projects I did for other customizers that I haven't shown off here before. The difficulty? Well, things were going great and I and was making really good progress and then season 5 of The Walking Dead hit Netflix. Plus there's this 14-month old running around who REALLY doesn't think I should be hanging out in that garage studio instead of watching him. He's pretty insistent about it. Still, let's give it a shot!

Check back daily to marvel at new stuff from my workbench or revel in my hilarious and inevitable defeat!

Mon Calamari Ranger

Another commission from the past few months, this one was a nice change of pace and particularly fun to tackle. Mon Cals are fun to work on, and making an armored commando version was a nice challenge. Again, based on EU/Legends material so I had to pull from various sources on what to include in the design, but I think he came out looking pretty formidable for a fish!

Parts Recipe:
Mon Calamari Warrior - Head and Hands
Fixer - Arms, Legs, Lower Torso
Savage Opress - Leg Armor
Machestro - Upper Torso
Stealth Tech Iron Man - Shoulder Armor
Avalanche - Blaster Rifle

Ajunta Pall - Sith Lord

Well, I need to be better about keeping this place up to date, don't I. Been a busy few months with my new role as stay-at-home-dad, but there are a few projects I got done I need to get archived here.

Ajunta Pall is another Star Wars EU (Legends) character. Like a lot of these characters, his appearance differs pretty significantly based on where he shows up, but I think I came up with a pretty good representation of him. Very happy with how his alternate heads came out.

I also need to be quicker at getting these documented, because I've forgotten what some of the parts I used are alread!

Parts Recipe:
G.I. Joe Trooper - Unmasked Head
Croc Master - Masked Head
Mandalore - Shoulders
Starkiller - Belt
Concept Han Solo - Boots
Rahm Kota - Legs, Torso
Darth Vader - Belt Box

Darth Wredd - Sith Lord

I'm having fun working on these Star Wars comic character commissions. Often time it involves translating multiple depictions from small panels and multiple artists into a single design, but when it all comes together it can be quite satisfying. I scrapped my original idea for the head and built this one up from spare parts and am very happy with how it turned out.

As a fellow fan of all things Dark Side, it's a kick to work on these and help another fan grow their figure collection.

Parts Recipe:
Savage Opress - Torso
Darth Vader - Arms, Boots
Darth Vader -  Upper Legs
Captain Panaka - Gauntlets
Iron Man Advanced Armor - Shoulder Armor
Zartan - Head
Conrad "Duke" Hauser - Helemet/Jaw Armor

Sergeant Zeddemore - Die Geisterjäger Reluctant Ally

"Die Geisterjäger" are my take on alt-history, WW2 Ghostbusters. I focused on trying to capture the general likeness of the character, rather than the specific actor that portrayed them in the movies.

From the Ark of the Covenant and the Right Hand of Doom, to the Spear of Destiny and the Keep at Dinu Mountain Pass, it seems that the Nazis' quest for Supernatural power manages to always go wrong. SOMEONE has to clean up the mess, and that's where "Die Geisterjäger" come in. With the help of an unlikely ally in a British soldier trapped behind enemy lines, the team desperately tries to save the earth from enemies unknown and unknowable... even as the world is tearing itself apart.

Sergeant Zeddemore is the sole survivor of the Allied Forces' equivalent of die Geisterjäger. His team was wiped out attempting to prevent the summoning of other worldly beings by the Nazi Paranormal Division. Succeeding at the cost of the lives of every other team member, Sergeant Zeddemore found himself trapped behind enemy lines in very hostile territory. When die Geisterjäger arrived to contain the aftermath of the incident, a begrudging alliance  was formed. Of all the team, Sergeant Zeddemore is no doubt the least happy with the arrangement, but he recognizes someone has to take on the Apocalypse while the rest of the world is locked in war against itself.

Hauptmann Venkman - Die Geisterjäger Officer

"Die Geisterjäger" are my take on alt-history, WW2 Ghostbusters. I focused on trying to capture the general likeness of the character, rather than the specific actor that portrayed them in the movies.

From the Ark of the Covenant and the Right Hand of Doom, to the Spear of Destiny and the Keep at Dinu Mountain Pass, it seems that the Nazis' quest for Supernatural power manages to always go wrong. With the help of an unlikely ally in a British soldier trapped behind enemy lines, the team desperately tries to save the earth from enemies unknown and unknowable... even as the world is tearing itself apart.

Where Here Stantz is a true believer in the super natural, and Doktor Spengler is an adamant non-believer, Hauptmann Venkman simply does not care. Having been able to charm his way up the chain of command to comfortable Captain's rank, Venkman had his pick of assignments. Assuming the special project known as Die Geisterjäger would be little more than a wild goose chase, he happily accepted the responsibility for leading the operation. Now, he doesn't know what to believe, and whether it's more horrifying in his current role or back on the front lines.

Herr Stantz - Die Geisterjäger Expert

Herr Stantz is, if there is one, the heart of die Geisterjäger. Obsessive about the occult and supernatural to the point of being oblivious to the man-made horrors of the war around him, Herr Stantz is a believer in all things strange. While Doktor Spengler works out the science to make the group's ghost hunting gear work, and Sergeant Zeddemore figures out the engineering to keep the equipment working in the field, it's Herr Stantz who often comes up with the initial imaginative spark of genius that inspires each piece. Doktor Spengler remains perplexed that most of his seemingly outlandish ideas and suggestions are able to be translated into a workable prototype.

Doktor Spengler - Die Geisterjäger Scientist

Doktor Spengler does not believe in the "paranormal." Despite his encounters with the seemingly supernatural, he maintains a theory that all such phenomena are grounded in the corporeal realm and subject to all the laws of physics and reality. Ghosts, in his opinion, are simply electromagnetic echoes left by the departed. Monsters are merely yet-to-be categorized fauna, no matter how strange they may seem. And his theories have proved solid enough to design sophisticated devices for tracking and capturing such mysteries. Still, each new encounter brings with it something even more alien and unknown than the last, and even the good doctor is beginning to wonder just long how pure science can explain these discoveries.
